From the Commissioner’s Desk: Twenty Years In, We’re Just Getting Started
A note from the founder on two decades of donkfests, and why the best chapter is the one we haven’t played yet.
Featured image prompt: Wide shot of a warm, wood-paneled home poker room at night, green felt table, stacks of chips, a single brass lamp, an empty Commissioner’s chair at the head of the table, nostalgic film-grain, golden lighting.
When we dealt the first hand of Poker In The Wood, none of us thought we were starting anything. We thought we were killing a Friday. Twenty-plus years later, the same cards keep finding the same hands, and somehow we’re still arguing about the same rivers.
People ask what the league is. It is not a casino. It is not a money grab. It is a standing appointment with the people who have watched your kids grow up, your hairline retreat, and your bluffs get worse with age. We are the Flock of Donkeys, and we wear it proudly.
What this newsroom is for
This is the part where the Commissioner gets ambitious. We’re building a proper media department around the league — power rankings, player spotlights, history, greatest hands, and yes, the occasional official investigation. Treat it like ESPN covering a league that meets in a garage. Because honestly, that’s exactly what it is.
Records are kept. Legends are honored. Bad beats are never, ever forgotten.
So pull up a chair. The blinds are going up, the stories are getting taller, and the best donkfest in the world is just getting started.
