A Brief, Mostly-True History of Poker In The Wood
Four friends, one table, and the slow-motion accident that became an institution.
Featured image prompt: Vintage-style sepia photo collage of four friends around a felt poker table across different eras, faces softly stylized (not photoreal), worn photo edges, scrapbook aesthetic, gold accents.
Every league has an origin myth. Ours has four: JD, Bish, Billy, and Javier — the founding generation that turned a casual card night into a two-decade tradition.
The founders
JD became the Commissioner essentially by being the only one who would keep score, then the only one who would build a spreadsheet to keep score, then the only one who would build a system to manage the spreadsheet that kept score. He now runs the whole thing from Las Vegas, which is either poetic or a conflict of interest.
Bish brought the edge — a construction-and-drywall fearlessness that translated directly into a fearless, action-first poker style. Billy brought the stories; the man is a one-person oral-history project, and at least half of league canon traces back to something Billy said at the table. Javier, JD’s best friend and the realtor of the group, represents the old-school era — he doesn’t make it out from Palm Desert as often as he’d like, but the table is never quite complete without him.
Why it stuck
It stuck for the same reason any good thing sticks: nobody wanted to be the one who let it end. Read the Commissioner’s note, then meet the modern roster in our Player Spotlights.
