Mark Wins Again; Rest of Poker League Officially Classified as His Dependents
NutGas News — Tourny T recap. The scores are real; the emergency committee and quotes are satire.
Mark has done it again. The elder statesman of Poker in the Wood collected another win, then apparently left the rest of the field to conduct unpaid research into how this keeps happening.
The updated official worksheet records 27 points for Mark in Tourny T. His season total is now 414, ahead of Bish on 392 and Marland on 384. That is a 22-point lead over Bish and a 30-point cushion over Marland. League officials have provisionally classified those cushions as orthopedic.
Retirement Plan Performing Exceptionally Well
Most retirement plans involve investments, careful budgeting, and occasionally checking a statement. Mark’s appears to involve showing up, watching everyone explain their strategy, and leaving with the evidence.
Every tournament, the crew arrives with fresh confidence and chips Mark has not collected yet. Somebody announces that this is the night the old man finally gets caught. Mark appreciates the optimism. It keeps the game interesting.
“He can’t keep doing this,” said an entirely imaginary league spokesman, staring at a spreadsheet confirming that he can.
The Spreadsheet Refuses to Cooperate
Billy posted 11 points in Tourny T, Terry earned 10, and Mondo took 9. Tim added 8, Bish 7, and Runyon 6. Those are tournament points, not season totals—and certainly not a record of who knocked out whom.
All respectable contributions. Unfortunately, Mark contributed 27, which made everyone else’s evening look like they were paying installments.
Bish remains second overall, close enough to keep the championship conversation alive and far enough behind to find the conversation irritating. Marland sits third, presumably reviewing whether “stop letting Mark win” qualifies as an actionable strategy.
Emergency Stop Mark Committee Convened
In the NutGas newsroom’s entirely fictional reconstruction, an emergency strategy meeting produced three possible explanations for Mark’s continued success: experience, patience, and discipline.
All three were immediately tabled because adopting them would require changes to the way everyone plays poker. The committee instead agreed to blame the cards.
A proposal to make Mark explain his decisions was withdrawn after members realized the answers might include “I folded” and “I didn’t call that ridiculous bet.” Nobody wanted that kind of negativity in the room.
The Walk Away Hurt More Than the Loss
Picture it: no lengthy victory speech. No presentation on probability. Just Mark gathering his winnings while a table full of supposedly dangerous poker players watches its evening leave with him.
The crew spent hours trying to read Mark. In our cartoon version of events, Mark spent those same hours reading the room and planning his exit. By the time anyone finished explaining the hand they “should have won,” the old man was already enjoying the most satisfying sound in poker: other people discussing your victory after you’ve gone home.
League Announces Bold New Strategy: Try Again
Next time, everyone insists, things will be different. They’ll tighten up. Pick better spots. Stop paying him off.
Mark has heard this before. He looks forward to seeing everyone at the next tournament.
Bring your best game. Mark already knows what to do with your second-best one.
